Contests & Awards
In this section, you will find information about all AWP-sponsored contests, as well as a members-only listing of grants, awards, submission calls, and other opportunities for writers. Current AWP contests include the following:
An annual competition to discover and publish the best work in four categories: creative nonfiction, poetry, short story, and novel. Applications are accepted January 1 through February 28 of each year.
Each annual conference and bookfair, one individual is awarded a lifetime achievement award for service in the literary arts. Nominations are open September 1 through October 31 of each year.
A literary competition for the discovery and publication of the best new works by students currently enrolled in AWP member programs. Nominations are open each October 1 through December 1 of each year.
A prize that celebrates the work of undergraduate student writers and editors, including exceptional content, cohesive design, and innovation. Submissions are open February 1–28 each year.
An annual prize for nonprofit presses and literary journals that recognizes the important role such organizations play in publishing creative works and introducing new authors to the reading public. Nominations are open September 1 through October 31 of each year.
A new award that will annually recognize writing conferences, festivals, centers, workshops, residencies, retreats, and other organizations for the important work they do to serve the writing community. Nominations are open September 1 through October 31 of each year.
