The Benefits of Institutional Membership in AWP
Faculty and students who belong to AWP member institutions receive the following benefits and services:
- Subscriptions to the Writer's Chronicle, published three times a semester. 20 or more copies of each issue to distribute to all your students. Choose the level of membership appropriate to your enrollment and provide all of your students with this useful magazine on the art of writing.
- Access to the online AWP Job List. Every other issue includes an informative article on seeking employment as a writer, and each issue includes current employment opportunities for writers in academe, publishing, and public affairs. The Job List is available as a Web publication through AWP eLink and is updated several times a month.
- Access to AWP eLink, our new Web publication for members only. AWP eLink includes: updates to our Job List; articles with great advice on how to conduct a search for employment; a calendar for forthcoming deadlines for grants and awards; and an archive of articles from the Writer’s Chronicle. You may have as many users of eLink as you have students in your particular level of membership.
- An entry in The AWP Official Guide to Writing Programs that indicates your program is a member of AWP.
- Promotion of your program. By joining AWP, you are supporting our many efforts to support creative writing programs, including yours: The AWP Official Guide to Writing Programs; a website with a directory of writing programs, and our Annual Conference, which, each year, highlights programs and writers of a different region of North America. AWP is the key source of information for students choosing writing programs. Our website generates an average of 5,500 unique visitors a month; we distribute at least 2,000 copies of each edition of The AWP Official Guide; and our conference attracts more than 2,500 attendees.
- Participation in the AWP Program Directors' Meeting, which convenes at the AWP Annual Conference. The meeting provides program directors with a forum to share information.
- Voting privileges. A director of a member program represents his or her program and colleagues by voting in AWP elections. AWP members shape the policies, services, and direction of AWP.
- Participation in the Intro Journal Project. Winners receive cash awards and publication in a journal in our consortium of nationally distributed literary journals: The Journal, Shenandoah, The Bellingham Review, Five Points, Cimmaron Review, Puerto Del Sol, Quarterly West, and Willow Springs — which feature sections containing the work of AWP Intro Award winners.
- Member discount of 50% on the entrance fee for faculty and students to enter the AWP Award Series.
- Membership discount of 18% on registration for the Annual Conference. (Students pay only $35 for admission to this event.)
- Membership discount of 5% on advertising rates in the Writer's Chronicle.
- Discounts on mailing list rentals.
- Advocacy to support professional standards and fair treatment of creative writing faculty and programs.
- Technical assistance and support for the development of writing programs.
- A network that supports writers, the art of writing, and contemporary literature. AWP works with other organizations to support freedom of expression, public funding for the arts, high standards in education, fair tax laws for authors, and other policies helpful to writers, publishers, teachers, and readers.
