The Association of Writers & Writing Programs

Donations to AWP

Dear Friend of AWP:

AWP has improved all of its services to writers and lovers of literature. We’ve launched a few new services, too.

We expanded our Annual Conference & Bookfair. For our recent 2009 Chicago Conference & Bookfair, 9,500 people gathered for 380 literary events and 550 exhibits. We have created one of North America’s largest literary events to introduce writers, new books, and small presses to the widest possible audience.

Last academic year, we established new hallmarks and pedagogical guidelines to set high standards for the teaching of creative writing and literature to undergraduates. This year, we revised our hallmarks for graduate programs to help make our MFA programs more effective in their development of future generations of writers, teachers, and readers.

We expanded the Writer’s Chronicle to include more articles and more news and information, and we increased honoraria payments to the contributing authors. The Chronicle provides many emerging talents with advice and inspiration on how to develop their art. We have doubled the number of pages and features appearing in the Chronicle.

We established the George Garrett Award for Outstanding Community Service in Literature to recognize and reward the great teachers, editors, program directors, mentors, and philanthropists who help contemporary literature to thrive.

We established endowments for the Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction and the Donald Hall Prize in Poetry. With our participating presses, our Award Series published four wonderful books this year by Scott Blackwood, Sharon Dolin, David Vann, and Sharon White. Please see our website for more information on these fine books.

We established the Endowment for AWP Services. This endowment, as it grows, will support AWP’s Career Services, the Intro Journals Project, the Garrett Award, and AWP’s other services for young and emerging writers. This year, AWP will distribute $120,000 in honoraria to the writers and teachers involved in our many projects.

We launched a free online version of the AWP Official Guide to Writing Programs to help prospective students select the best programs for their needs. We launched AWP eLink, a website that provides up-to-date listings of job opportunities, publishing opportunities, and grants and awards notices for writers and students. AWP eLink also includes an archive of 968 essays and interviews on the art of writing from the Writer’s Chronicle. Our websites attract 750,000 unique visitors annually.

We have provided a supportive network and community for writers who often feel isolated in their devotion to a difficult and lonely art. We have introduced many writers to one another, just as we have introduced many writers to publishers.

With your help, we will continue to build support for writers, teachers, and good books. The writer’s place is in the public arena, and AWP has been building a bigger town square. Please support the good works of AWP.

Sincerely,
David Fenza
Executive Director
