Affiliate Membership
We have a special category
of membership for small groups of writers, editors, and teachers
who work at schools or at organizations with extremely limited
resources.
Examples of affiliate members are: junior colleges, technical
schools, nonprofit literary presses, community colleges, publishing
centers, writers' unions, local literary & writing centers,
writing service organizations, and literary magazines. Qualifications
for this category of membership may be found below.

Benefits of Affiliate Membership in AWP
- Affiliate Members of AWP pay reduced dues of $225 a year
and receive many of the same benefits of a full membership:
- 6 issues of the Writer's
Chronicle for up to 10 individuals. Each issue features
essays on the art of writing poetry, fiction and nonfiction;
interviews with accomplished writers; and listings of opportunities
for grants, awards, and publication.
- Access to the online AWP Job List. Every other issue includes an informative article on seeking employment as a writer, and each issue includes current employment opportunities for writers in academe, publishing, and public affairs. The Job List is available as a Web publication through AWP eLink and is updated several times a month.
- Access for 10 individuals to AWP eLink, a website for members
only. AWP eLink includes: updates to our Job List; articles
with great advice on how to conduct your search for a job;
a calendar with forthcoming deadlines and information on
grants and awards; an archive of articles from the Writer’s
Chronicle; links to writing programs, conferences, and colonies;
and documents useful to teachers and administrators of writing
programs.
- An entry in The AWP Official Guide to Writing Programs that indicates your educational institution or organization
is a member of AWP.
- Promotion of your school or organization. By joining AWP,
you are supporting our many efforts to support the literary
arts, publishing, and education: The AWP Official Guide
to Writing Programs, a website with a directory of
writing programs, and our Annual Conference, which, each
year, highlights programs and writers of a different region
of North America. AWP is the key source of information for
students choosing writing programs. Our website attracts
an average of 5,500 unique visitors a month. We distribute
2,000 copies of each edition of our Guide.
- Participation in the AWP Program Directors' Meeting which
convenes at the AWP Annual Conference. The meeting provides
program directors with a forum to share information.
- Member discount of 50% on the entrance fee for faculty
and students to enter the AWP
Award Series.
- Membership discount of 18% on registration for the Annual
Conference. (Students pay only $35 for admission to
this event.)
- Membership discount of 5% on advertising rates in the Writer's
Chronicle.
- Discounts on mailing list rentals.
- Advocacy to support professional
standards and fair treatment of creative writing faculty
and programs. AWP works with other organizations to support
freedom of expression, public funding for the arts, high
standards in education, and policies helpful to writers,
publishers, teachers, and readers.
- Technical assistance and support for the development of
writing programs and curriculum.
- A network that supports writers, the art of writing, and
contemporary literature.
Prospective affiliate members must meet the qualifications
below. The dues of $220 a year applies only to affiliate members
in the United States; please contact the AWP office at services@awpwriter.org
to sign up as a Canadian or international affiliate member.
Qualifications for Affiliate Membership in AWP
AWP recognizes that serious literary writing and teaching
takes place in institutions that have not established degree-conferring
programs in the art of writing. An Affiliate Member may be
an institution or center that does the following:
- Publishes contemporary poetry, fiction, plays, or nonfiction
as a nonprofit business.
- Serves as a nonprofit independent literary arts center
where creative writing is discussed, valued, and shared
for the continuing education of writers.
- Offers classes in creative writing, although the department
does not offer a degree in creative writing or in English
literature.
