Ron Wallace Receives the 2005 AWP/ George Garrett Award For Outstanding Community Service in Literature
The Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) has selected Ron Wallace as the recipient of the 2005 George Garrett Award for Outstanding Community Service in Literature. This award is given every year in order to recognize an individual who has made extraordinary donations of care, time, labor, or money to support writers and their literary accomplishments. The author of many books of poetry, fiction, and criticism, Ron Wallace established the undergraduate program in creative writing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and he recently established the university’s graduate program, which provides financial support for all accepted students. As an editor, Wallace also launched two poetry prizes at the University of Wisconsin Press: the Brittingham and Feliz Pollak Prizes. And he helped to establish the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, which provides post-graduate fellowships for writers.
“For his building of new programs and publishing venues for writers, for his great work as a teacher, program director, and editor,” said David Fenza, Executive Director of AWP, “AWP is delighted to recognize Ron Wallace for his exceptional generosity and effectiveness in supporting the next generation of emerging talents.”
Candidates for the George Garrett Award may be nominated by members of AWP, and the recipient is selected by AWP’s Board of Directors. The award includes a $1,000 honorarium in addition to travel, accommodations, and registration for AWP’s Annual Conference.
The AWP/George Garrett award is named after George Garrett, who made exceptional
contributions to his fellow writers as a teacher, mentor, editor, friend, board member, and good spirit.
